The Scarlet Ibis belongs to the Ciconiformes order. It inhabits tropical forests along the coasts and marshy areas of Venezuela and Brasil. Its unmistakable appearance, thanks to its scarlet plumage, is the main cause that brought this species on the verge of extinction. The feathers are in high demand for local handicraft and their meat is served in many trendy Brasilian restaurants. Its wingspan is 80-100 cm. The curved beak is specialized to extract crabs, invertebrates and algae from the muddy waters.
It nests on trees and lays 2-4 eggs.
